Penfield – Made to Last
Back in 1975 Massachusetts the aim for Penfield was simply to make clothing that could withstand the demands of the New England climate; it’s from this simple premise that the blueprint for an international brand was formed. Their reputation is largely based on their ability to make the highest quality down-filled jackets, fleece and outerwear.
They’re not simply outdoor specialists anymore as their collections cater for a wider client base, meeting the needs of the modern fashion conscious consumer. What started out as a mainstay for outdoor enthusiasts has bled into the mainstream and become a staple of both mountain walkers and city dwellers. Despite branching out into other types of apparel the same fundamental driving force has always been there -materials are everything. The first thing you notice when you pick up a Penfield piece is the quality of the material used and you instantly know it is durable, hard-wearing and will keep you cool or warm, depending on the season. Premium 80/20 goose down (80% down, 20% feather) cannot be beaten for near weightless comfort and easy care. Naturally breathable Teflon™ and DWR coated down-proof outers are tremendously strong, shed water easily and provide the focus for a product that appeals to a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts. Their Ripstop fabrics are engineered to be incredibly light and yet super-strong, resistant to virtually anything the elements can muster. Penfield works constantly to improve and develop new fabric and garment innovations, exemplified in their previous collections, ‘Expedition’ & ‘Black Bear Series’.
A lot of labels out there simply follow the flock, putting out designs that are already selling well elsewhere or are “on trend” i.e. going with trends rather than creating them. Penfield is not one of these brands; they have, since day one, gone entirely down the path they’ve laid out themselves, coming up with innovative styles that have inspired countless other brands through the years. The business has extended beyond outdoor channels and into a broad range of retail channels, including retailers such as Barneys, Saks and a number of exclusive independent stores around the world. These have also done many successful collaborations with like-minded brands, the most notable probably being their goose down jacket with Alife.
Still retaining the integrity of clothing that is made to function in the extremes of the New England climate, it is equally at home on the streets of Boston, London or Tokyo. The heritage lives on, continuing to be strong.
